Orlando Pirates Overwhelm Polokwane City in 3-0 Victory
Orlando Pirates continued their impressive run with a dominant 3-0 win over Polokwane City at Orlando Stadium in Soweto, Gauteng.
The Buccaneers, buoyed by a lively crowd on Heritage Day, Tuesday 24 September, showcased their intent early in the season, with Monnapule Saleng and super-sub Evidence Makgopa leading the charge.
The first half saw both sides playing it cautious, with Pirates struggling to break through Polokwane’s resilient defence. However, the deadlock was broken in the 55th minute when Saleng capitalised on a defensive error to open the scoreboard.
The introduction of Makgopa proved pivotal, as the striker found the back of the net twice late in the match. His first came from a rebound, while his second was the result of a careless back pass.
Coach José Riveiro praised the contributions from his substitutes, particularly Makgopa, whose performances have signalled a resurgence after a difficult season.
“It was two different halves … In the second half, we started slow, and there were a lot of interruptions. But I think once we started scoring, we were flowing,” Riveiro said in a post-match interview.
Pirates’ victory has added to their growing momentum – following recent successes in both the MTN8 and CAF Champions League campaigns – and they are currently sitting at the top of the Premier Soccer League standings.
